Harvard University officials on Monday announced a “temporary” hiring freeze. In a letter to university staff on Harvard’s website, President Alan Garber and other school officials cited ”substantial financial uncertainties driven by rapidly shifting federal policies” facing universities across the nation.

Harvard University announced it will be implementing a temporary hiring freeze due to“rapidly shifting federal policies,” according to a Monday letter from Harvard President Alan Garber.

Harvard University is the latest school to implement a hiring freeze as federal funding remains uncertain. President Trump has threatened to cut federal funding for schools that allow "illegal" protests. Universities use millions of dollars in federal funding for student aid and research programs.

The hiring pause at one of the nation’s wealthiest schools comes after other schools have also announced efforts to save money.

Garber continued that Harvard had been preparing for "changes in the revenues that support our mission," and has asked that its schools and units identify "strategic adjustments in their spending to build the long-term capacity needed to advance academic priorities at a time of uncertain revenues" as part of its 2026 fiscal year.

The university’s pause on faculty and staff hiring comes after the Trump administration pulled $400 million worth of grants and contracts at Columbia University on Friday.

Harvard is temporarily freezing all hiring, the university announced Monday. The freeze will apply to staff and faculty within all schools and divisions of Harvard.
