Greece’s National Gallery says a Greek lawmaker attacked four paintings in an exhibition, including one he had previously criticized as offensive on religious grounds.

Greek police detained a member of parliament Monday after he allegedly attacked art works which are part of at an exhibition in the country’s National Gallery in Athens. Nikolaos Papadopoulos, who is a member of the small ultra-religious Niki party,

On Monday, Papadopoulos and an accomplice entered the museum and removed the works from the wall, threw them to ground and stamped on them. Previously Papadopoulos had raised what he called the artist’s blasphemy with Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni through a parliamentary question.

The Greek National Gallery unveiled photographs on Monday afternoon capturing the aftermath of an act of vandalism by Nikos Papadopoulos, a fundamentalist MP from the ultra-orthodox Niki party, who claimed the targeted artworks were offensive to Christianity.

Nikolaos Papadopoulos, a member of the small ultra-religious Niki party, allegedly smashed glass cases and attacked works he considered blasphemous.
