It’s been a long four years, but Michelle Zauner’s beloved indie pop act Japanese Breakfast is finally back with For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women), the band’s fourth album, released Friday.

With a new album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women), out on Friday, it’s a big week for Michelle Zauner, lead vocalist and guitarist for the band Japanese Breakfast—and a heck of a time for the pipes to burst at her upstate New York home. “I’m kind of upscale glamping right now,” she says when I ring her on Sunday morning.

Zauner talked to The Associated Press about her fourth studio album, “For Melancholy Brunettes (and Sad Women).” Out Friday, it’s that rare thing: a cerebral yet deeply felt album from an artist with just enough commercial success to secure resources for her still-quite-indie vision.
