New York governor declares emergency as brush fires burn in Long Island
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency Saturday after several wind-driven brush fires broke out in New York’s Long Island, sending large smoke plumes into the air and shutting down a highway.
Long Island is expected to see a three-day stretch of rainy, windy conditions, beginning Wednesday, with temperatures reaching into the 50s, the highest of 2025. The rain is expected to be timed to Wednesday's evening commute.
A wind advisory is in effect for Long Island Thursday night and Friday, according to the National Weather Service. The wind advisory will be in effect from 6 p.m. Thursday night until 4 p.m. Friday, the NWS said.
The last of four blazes that began in Suffolk County on Saturday has been put out, but Long Island and the Hudson Valley still faced a high fire risk on Sunday, officials said.
