According to a Pew survey, Black Americans are the most religious racial/ethnic group in the United States. Of Black Americans, 83% identify as Christian and Black Americans attend church more often and rely more on religious communities than white Americans.

The National Black Church Initiative (NBCI), a coalition of 34,000 churches, is committed to strengthening the African American family by repairing the damage created by unmarried parents, weak moral standards, and years of neglecting to address this truly pressing societal issue.

Black churches primarily arose in the 19th century, during a time when race-based slavery and racial segregation were both commonly practiced in the United States. Blacks generally searched for an area where they could independently express their faith, find leadership, and escape from inferior treatment in white dominated churches.
