Scrooge refuses to dine with his Nephew, Fred; he refuses to donate to the poor, and he refuses to give Cratchit the necessary warmth to work at his desk by not buying more coal. It's this refusal to treat others decently will come to haunt Scrooge later in the story.

Past asks Scrooge if Christmas has done anything good for him, and Scrooge says no. They enter Scrooge's old school, and there they see a younger Scrooge crying at his desk.
